About

General

Igreja do Santo Condestável is an active Catholic parish in Campo de Ourique, designed by Vasco Regaleira and built between 1946 and 1951. Inaugurated on 14 August 1951, it is dedicated to Nuno Álvares Pereira, the 14th-century Constable of Portugal later canonised as Saint Nuno of Saint Mary. Its irregular polygonal plan is arranged in three naves with side galleries beneath vaults, making its structure as notable as its name. The church was partly built with resources from the Portuguese Army; historical memory and parish purpose meet in one still-used building.

Visit

Inside, art and worship share the same space. The decoration includes work by Almada Negreiros, chancel paintings by Portela Júnior and sculptures by Domingos Soares Branco. The parish is cared for by the Salesians of Lisbon, whose programme includes Mass and sacramental life. It is best approached as a place of worship rather than a museum: a quiet look is appropriate when parish activity allows, with the discretion expected at a functioning church.
