Neighborhood market

Mercado de Campo de Ourique

Mercado de Campo de Ourique is one of the neighbourhood's daily anchors: a traditional fresh market, a casual food hall and an easy meeting point under the same roof. Its stalls keep the everyday rhythm of fruit, fish, flowers, bread and groceries alive, while the counters around them make it just as natural to stay for lunch, dinner, a glass of wine or dessert.

The appeal is its mix of old and new Campo de Ourique. You can pass through quickly for errands, bring friends who want several kinds of food at the same table, or use it as a relaxed first stop before walking deeper into the neighbourhood.

A covered market built for the bairro

The market sits on Rua Coelho da Rocha and still works as a practical neighbourhood building, not only as a place to eat.

Easy to fold into a walk

The entrances open straight into the surrounding residential streets, which makes the market a natural stop between Jardim da Parada, the church and local shops.

Old market rhythm, newer tables

The everyday stalls and the food counters now share the same room, so shopping and staying for a meal feel part of one visit.

A market made for a residential neighbourhood

Mercado de Campo de Ourique was created to solve a practical neighbourhood problem: Campo de Ourique needed a permanent covered food market close to the people who lived there. The proposal came in 1926 from Dionísio Nobre, a local industrialist and resident, and the market opened in April 1934.

That origin still matters. Even after the food-hall renovation, the market is easiest to understand as a piece of neighbourhood infrastructure: a place for fish, meat, fruit, vegetables and flowers, but also a place where people stop, meet and read the daily mood of Campo de Ourique.

From traditional stalls to food hall

The building was designed by architect António Couto Martins and later passed into municipal management in 1973. It was renovated in the early 1990s, then substantially reworked in 2013, when part of the market was reorganised around restaurants, bars and shared tables.

The result is not quite a classic market and not quite a restaurant court. It works because both uses remain visible: morning shopping, lunch counters, late-afternoon drinks, dessert, and families or groups eating different things at the same table.

How to experience it

Come earlier if you want the traditional market feeling, when errands and fresh-food shopping are more present. Come later for the social version: tables filling, people choosing between counters, and the market acting as an indoor square.

It pairs naturally with the Church of the Saint Condestable just behind it, Jardim da Parada a few minutes away, and the surrounding streets of small shops. The best visit is usually not a single stop, but a small loop through the centre of Campo de Ourique.

Hummusbar Lisboa

Hummusbar Lisboa is a Middle Eastern counter in Mercado de Campo de Ourique, built around hummus, warm pita, falafel, shakshuka, salads and filled pitas. It is a good fit for a quick lunch or informal dinner, especially when a filling vegetarian or vegan-friendly meal is the aim. Hummus is the centre of the menu, rather than a side dish. Order a bowl, a pita sandwich or a few plates to share, then let the market setting keep the meal casual and direct.

Atalho Burger House

Atalho Burger House is Grupo Atalho's burger counter inside [Mercado de Campo de Ourique](/places/mercado-de-campo-de-ourique). It brings the group's meat-focused idea to a compact choice of smash burgers and classic burgers, with a crispy chicken alternative. The official menu specifies daily-ground, 100% Black Angus beef for the smash burgers, served in lightly toasted brioche. Cheese, bacon cheese, and spicy versions are clear starting points; fries, coleslaw, and salad do the supporting work. It is a route to an Atalho burger without committing to a full steak meal.

Açaí Natura - Campo de Ourique

Açaí Natura is an açaí counter inside [Mercado de Campo de Ourique](/places/mercado-de-campo-de-ourique), serving made-to-order bowls, cups, and smoothies. The branch’s range centers on açaí in a customizable format: an order can be built with fruit, granola, creams, sauces, and other toppings. It can stay simple or become a more substantial snack; the choices are made at the counter rather than prescribed by a fixed dessert list. This is a focused stop, not a full sit-down meal, and its market location lets it fit naturally into a wider visit. Bowls suit a quick pause, while cups and smoothies keep the format flexible for takeaway. There is no sprawling menu narrative here: açaí is the point, and the toppings do the fine-tuning.
